Tips in Buying a Refurbished Notebook and Antivirus Software

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

There are various varieties of refurbished notebooks and antivirus software you can buy at a computer store or online. Check on the specifications of the product before buying.

When buying a refurbished notebook and antivirus software, it is important to consider all the possible factors that can affect its quality. Of course, you do not want to buy something you will regret later on. Here are some useful tips in buying a refurbished notebook and antivirus software:

Buying a Refurbished Notebook

In order to save money, most people purchase refurbished notebooks instead of a new one. With inflation and the recession these days, it is more practical. Imagine saving more than $100 by doing this. When it comes to the quality, of course, there are things you need to consider before you finally say yes to a refurbished notebook.

Refurbished notebooks are computer machines that were returned to the company because of various possible reasons. There are also those that did not even leave the factory due to testing defects. Other reasons can be as simple as a buyer changing his mind or he realized its too pricy as well as other reasons not particularly due to the computer itself.

Retailers often take these returned machines, have the hard drive wiped, have the software reinstalled and have it placed back on the shelf on sale. These are also called open box computers which should never be confused with factory refurbished notebooks. Hence, these open box computers can also have the full warranty of the manufacturer but this is totally dependent on the retailer. This is why it is best to check the warranty before you make the purchase.

If a notebook was returned due to working issues, transit damages and the like, most of the time, retailers replace the notebook’s defective parts with standard factory parts. After this, it will go through a series of check ups in order to make sure that it is already working properly. Then it will be placed on a sale price. This is now called factory refurbished notebooks.

Occasionally, brick and mortar retailers sell these factory refurbished notebooks, however they are now more commonly sold online. You can also see them within the site of the main manufacturer. In fact, Dell, HP, Apple and various other manufacturers have refurbished notebook deals on their websites. When it comes to big box retailers, they don’t stock refurbished notebooks in their store inventories but they are placed on their online stores.

With the low price, it is definitely an attractive deal but you need to consider the various potential consequences that can arise with the purchase of refurbished machines. So, prior to purchasing an open box or refurbished notebook computer, you need to ask for the remaining warranty and if it can be extended; ask if every component that came with it when it was new is still there; and ask if you can still return it if you will encounter problems with it.

Aside from all of this, before you buy a refurbished notebook, make sure that you are satisfied with it. Even if saving more than a $100 is a great deal, if it compromised the quality as well as your confidence in the machine, it is not worth it and you should just buy a new one.

Buying Antivirus Software

With all the different brands of antivirus software in the market, it is really hard to choose which can be the best for your computer. Although it is best to go with a reputable brand, there are antivirus software already comes with the computer. The best thing to do is to take note of the version and brand of antivirus software that comes with the computer; if this is preinstalled, if you will be the one installing it or if they will be the one to install it; if this antivirus software is fully functional or it is limited by a demo package; and if you will be entitled to virus defined updates. Once you have checked on this and you are satisfied with the answers then it is a sure deal.

5 Tips to Help You Find a Legitimate Web Site Domain Name

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

One of the most important decisions you will make with a home business prior to even getting started is selecting a domain name. This name is going to act as your internet identity making it vital you take the time to find one that is suitable for your business. Here are five tips to help you find a legitimate web site domain name.

1. Dot com

There are a plethora of different suffixes you can find on the internet today. Some of the more common suffixes include .com, .net and .org. If at all possible, find a domain name with .com as this is one of the oldest extensions and is typically what people type in first. It will show that you have been around for a while and have an established business even if you really haven’t.

2. Shorter the better

No one wants to type in some web site domain name that is 50 to 100 characters long. Not only is it a pain to type in, but it can also be fairly difficult to remember. Your goal should be to keep the name as short as possible while still allowing customers and prospects to associate it with your business. If at all possible, keep the name below 10 characters without including the suffix.

3. Ask for advice

If you find a few different web site domain names and are not sure which would be best for your business, ask for advice. Talk to friends and family members to see what they think is most suitable for your web site and business. You want the name to instantly click so people can quickly find your site.

4. Buy now

The number one mistake you can make is sitting on a name trying to determine if it is the right one or not. People are buying domain names left and right as more and more web sites emerge every day. The longer you sit on the name the more likely someone else is to snatch it from underneath you. If you have any inclination of purchasing the name, JUST DO IT!

5. Pay a reasonable price

The days of companies getting away with asking for hundreds of dollars for a domain name are over. There are a plethora of companies competing and selling domain names all over the internet today which has drastically lowered prices. Therefore, if you see a web site domain name you like, buy it. There is nothing wrong with having multiple domain names for your business.

How to Find a Domain Name – Secrets Revealed to Getting the Perfect Domain Name

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

If Shakespeare asked his famous question, “What’s in a name?” about domain names, he’d get a slew of answers. Mostly, he would hear that the right domain name could make the difference between success and failure for an online business. If you’re starting an online business and it’s time for you to choose a domain name, the following ideas might help you get the best name for your company.

1. With over 100 million domain names already registered, you’ll need to be creative to come up with a good name. But creative doesn’t mean complicated-the simpler the better. Online domain name sites can tell you if a name is taken. Some offer available variations. You may be able to buy a domain name that is already registered, but that can be pricey. You can also search for names that will expire soon, if you’re willing to wait for a particular name.

2. You’ll be off to a good start if your domain name is the same as your website name. But this is only one successful naming strategy. If you own Mermaid’s Lobster Pound, Ilovelobster.com may be as good or even better than mermaidslobsterpound.com. Just beware that if someone searches for “lobster pound” you may not be at the top of the list. Just make sure your domain name reflects your business and contains some of the same keywords.

3. You may be disappointed if you’re set on a particular name and can’t obtain it at a price you can afford. If your business is new, you might want to get your domain name first, then name your website.

4. If yours is a commercial site, go for a .com extension. The .com extension speaks of success, trustworthiness, and reliability. It’s like a street address in an affluent neighborhood. Also, if you have a .net extension and a competitor has the same name with the more widely recognized .com extension, your customers are likely to go to the .com site and you’ll lose business.

5. Consider obtaining all names that are similar to your domain name to make sure there is no confusion. If you’re laceshoppe.com, for example, also register laceshop.com, laceshop.net, and laceshoppe.net.

6. Your name should be short and easy to remember. Unique, distinctive, memorable. Most of the common, one-word domain names are already taken or are very expensive, so you’ll have to come up with something new, especially if you want a .com extension. Consider combining simple, positive words that reflect your business. A short phrase is an acceptable option.

7. There’s nothing wrong with inventing a new word for a domain name. Just be sure it’s easy to spell and remember.

All this advice boils down to three essentials: Your domain name should be easy to remember, related to your business or website name, and easy to spell. Take your time finding the right domain name. It’s an important decision for your business.
